It is important to prepare the flower food correctly, using tepid water. Dispensing systems are available to florists. These regulate the proportion of nutrient to water, ensuring that the correct amount of flower food is used. Excessive dilution of the flower food will deprive cut materials of its beneficial effects. Use the solution once only, and do not mix old solutions with new. One point to remember is that flower food should not be used with metal containers, as a reaction can occur between the metal and the nutrients. This hinders the performance of the food and can corrode the metal. Some manufacturers specify that their foods should not be used with lead crystal containers. Constructing a Structured Bouquet
Structured bouquets are constructed in a similar way to those in the traditional style, but the design is different, and the bouquet sits on top of the hand rather than being held facing forwards in the hand. Foliage has an integral role, and berries, cones and even stems play a part in these designs, which look attractive from all angles, with special cut flowers and foliage at the back of the design for the bride to enjoy. From spring through fall, achimenes bear masses of colorful 1- to 2 ˝-inch-wide blossoms, often with handsome veining in their throats. They are also excellent for use as a bedding plant as well, for they flower right into October, or at least until the first frost. I have never been a lover of tuberous-rooted begonias though they are magnificent as a handsome planting in parks or large areas where they have plenty of space to show off to their best advantage. But these little semperfiorens are another matter altogether, and a great delight. ‘Venus Rose’ is one of my favourites, and is always included whenever I have flowers delivered Rusholme. It stays a good shade of pink all summer as does ‘Rosanova’, and ‘Dancia Scarlet’ has the added attraction of dark bronze foliage which is a lovely plus.
Cake and Table Decorations
Delicate fresh flower and foliage, with pretty ribbons, daintily arranged, make a charming cake-top decoration for various occasions, including anniversaries and engagements and, of course, weddings.
The wedding cake is an important feature of the reception, but if placed in front of the bride and groom it can hide them from their guests. Suggest that the cake has a place of honour on a separate table, to be decorated by you. This will create interest and provide a centrepiece for the cutting of the cake.
Always ask the bride for details of the cake, as today’s cakes are very individual, and there are innumerable styles and sizes. Slowing down flowering
There are times during the seasons when it may be advantageous for a florist to ‘hold’ the development of a flower, perhaps to even out a glut of flowers, or before a peak sales period. Tulips, gladioli and peonies are especially suited to the following method.
It is essential to use flowers that are in good condition, showing no signs of mould or fungal diseases, so a thorough inspection is recommended. If the cut flowers are flaccid, they will need a drink to regain firmness before storage. Excess foliage is removed and bunches can be re-wrapped in paper. Shake off surplus water. Cellophane should not be used, as it can induce moulds. Once wrapped bunches are carefully packed into boxes.

Cultural Information: Sow seed in early spring in cold winter areas, and in late summer or fall where winters are mild. Bachelor's buttons are very adaptable and grow in poor, sandy or average soil. Fertilizer is not necessary unless the soil is unusually poor. For a continuous supply of flowers, deadhead daily. Because of their weak stems, the taller varieties need staking to prevent sprawling.
A Separate Cutting Garden
Not all flowers for drying are everlasting; many annuals, perennials and shrubs can be easily preserved. Take a walk in your garden and I am sure you will find a bounty of materials just waiting to be harvested for drying.
