Colour it right
Proportion can also relate to the amount of colour, texture and space used within a design. My Favourite Flowers - Allium

My favourite is A. siculum from Sicily, its large dark-red bell-like flowers with the outer petals striped in blue-green, borne on curving 90 cm (3 ft) stems. The loose umbels of up to thirty flowers, appearing in May and June, are very unusual and striking. The shorter A. caeruleum has rounded heads of deep-blue flowers in June and July. Others I would recommend are A. giganteum, a real giant with huge heads of purple flowers on 1.2 m (4 ft) stems; A. rosenbachianum, one of the best for arranging with large heads of purple-lilac flowers Kingston upon Thames; A. ostrowskianum, with short stems of bright pink flowers, excellent for the rock garden; and A. roseum ‘Grandiflorum’, a little taller with small rounded purple flowers, which dry so well and retain their colour all winter.
Cultivation
Plant from September to November — the earlier the better — in any good well-drained soil, in sun in an open bed, or among herbaceous plants. Mulch and give some soluble feed for the first year or two until the bulbs are established. Remove flower heads as they fade.
Conditioning and drying
I find a teaspoonful of bleach put into water in a vase stops the onion-like smell. The seed heads should be hung upside down in a dry atmosphere; take care that the heads do not touch each other.
Arranging
These rounded heads are useful for putting into summer mixed groups, and are marvellous to use when dried. They dry best if left in very shallow water in a warm place, or if hung upside down.

Wiring Cut Flowers
You can keep tulips and other tall cut flowers standing up straight and prevent them from bending toward the light by stiffening the stems with St George florists wire. Insert the wire into the stem below each blossom and up into the flower’s base, then gently wrap the wire down around the length of the stem. In the case of hollow-stemmed flowers such as anemones, the wire can be inserted up through the bottom of the stem until its tip reaches the head of the flower; the stems then can be shaped into graceful curves if desired.

Choosing the plants
In the garden you use the same technique as for flower arranging, grouping for contrast and allowing leaves to play a major part. When arranging a vase, the best way to avoid a spotty effect is to place together one or two flowers of the same colour. Many shrubs and evergreens need a two- or three-month period of moist, cool storage (called stratification) in order to germinate well. Flowers of the world - Gypsophila paniculata (baby’s breath)
Characteristics: Baby's breath is tiny white clouds of flowers on strong branching stems. The plant adds an airy effect to both the summer garden and winter dried arrangements. The flowers appear in midsummer and continue to bloom until early fall. Try growing the large double-flowered variety 'Bristol Fairy'. 'Early Snowball' is an early blooming variety with small, double flowers. Gypsophila is also available from Possilpark florists in the annual form G. elegans, which has lance-shaped foliage and pink to white flowers. Another annual, 'Covent Garden White', has clusters of large white flowers. Both of these annuals can be easily air-dried and used in arrangements. The flowers tend to darken into an off-white color after drying. This antique white color is preferred for certain projects.
Cultural Information: Gypsophila does best in well-drained, alkaline soil in full sunlight. A generous handful of lime sprinkled yearly in a circle around the base of the plant should keep the soil alkaline. The roots of baby's breath are deep and need a lighter soil through which they can penetrate. Propagate by sowing seed in early spring, or taking cuttings in late spring. Plant baby's breath 36 inches apart. Like most perennials, it requires division after three years. Annual Gypsophila, G. elegans, is best propagated by direct sowing seeds in early spring.

One of my favourite flowers - Alcea rosea (hollyhock)
Characteristics: Hollyhocks are an old-fashioned favorite. They are available in a wide range of colors and you can have the flowers delivered Didsbury in forms: single, double, ruffled and fluted. My favorite is still the original sin­gle form, but for drying pur­poses, the double forms are best. The large flowers, up to 4 inches across, are thickly massed on long stems. Allow them to self-sow about your garden to ensure a continuous supply. Because hollyhocks are tall, they are perfect at the back of the garden, or against a fence or building.
Harvesting/Drying: Pick the flowers at their peak when the color is still strong and the flowers are fresh. Both double and reg­ular varieties can be air-dried, but they will lose some of their natural color and the flowers will tighten up slightly. Air-­dried hollyhocks resemble col­orful crepe-paper flowers. If you would like to achieve a more perfect flower shape and color, dry in silica gel. Store in an airtight container after drying.

Rose Festivals
Of the scores of rose shows held each year, a few have become full-fledged festivals, complete with parades, queens and attendant hoopla. The largest of these is the 10-day Rose Festival staged every June in Portland, Oregon, a major commercial growing center that calls itself the "Rose City." Others are the September Festival of Roses in Wasco, heart of the central California rose industry, and the Texas Rose Festival, an October fixture in Tyler, Texas. Harvesting/Drying: Pick flowers Midway South at the peak of their color, before they have fully opened. Remove foliage and hang to air-dry. The flowers will fade a bit but they still make a sunny addition to dried arrangements.

It is important to prepare the flower food correctly, using tepid water. Dispensing systems are available to florists. These regulate the proportion of nutrient to water, ensuring that the correct amount of flower food is used. Excessive dilution of the flower food will deprive cut materials of its beneficial effects. Use the solution once only, and do not mix old solutions with new. One point to remember is that flower food should not be used with metal containers, as a reaction can occur between the metal and the nutrients. This hinders the performance of the food and can corrode the metal. Some manufacturers specify that their foods should not be used with lead crystal containers. Achimenes
From spring through fall, achimenes bear masses of colorful 1- to 2 ½-inch-wide blossoms, often with handsome veining in their throats. It stays a good shade of pink all summer as does ‘Rosanova’, and ‘Dancia Scarlet’ has the added attraction of dark bronze foliage which is a lovely plus.

Slowing down flowering
There are times during the seasons when it may be advantageous for a florist to ‘hold’ the development of a flower, perhaps to even out a glut of flowers, or before a peak sales period. Tulips, gladioli and peonies are especially suited to the following method.
It is essential to use flowers that are in good condition, showing no signs of mould or fungal diseases, so a thorough inspection is recommended. Not all flowers for drying are everlasting; many annuals, perennials and shrubs can be easily preserved. Take a walk in your garden and I am sure you will find a bounty of materi­als just waiting to be harvested for drying. Many people fall in love with flower arranging, since it is an ideal way to pass some time, especially for the less active amongst us. A Rose Buttonhole
The romantic associations of the rose make it a popular choice for a buttonhole, and many grooms pick a rose of the same colour as those in the bridal bouquet. Roses can also be worn by the best man, the ushers and the lady guests.

This technique also has the advantage that only a minimal amount of bacteria will be left alive to grow on the stem ends.

Moss
Moss is often used to cover the mechanics of an arrangement, such as foam, wire or glue. And until you can get them into the ground, protect them carefully from drying out or freezing, or from sudden fluctuations in temperature.

Stick to the tried and tested
When arranging flowers, many people consider only the sensuous impact the actual blossoms will have on the beholder. But flowers Oaklands Junction are more than just blossoms — they are also composed of stems, leaves and roots. And then there are the myriad other forms a flowering plant may assume, such as a tree, shrub or vine. Taking an artistic risk with an arrangement rather than sticking to the tried and tested, may therefore result from an impulse to experiment with the delightful and novel shapes and textures of tall, smooth stems, glossy leaves, rustling grasses, bare branches and sculptural seedpods.

Preparing a mossed frame
Most florists use plastic foam bases as foundations for funeral tributes, as preparing a moss frame — mossing the frame, backing and then edging it — is a tedious task. However, the techniques involved in using a mossed frame are part of the florist’s basic skills.
Mossing, backing and edging
Collect the materials together and start by cleaning the damp moss, removing any twigs or stones. Attach reel wire or string to the frame and, with the frame directly in front of you, place several handfuls of moss, about 5cm (2in) high, on the frame. Bind the moss on firmly, and continue, adding moss evenly and binding diagonally across the fame until it is completely covered with moss. Take the reel wire around for a second time between the previous twists of wire. Cut the wire; return it into the moss, and trim the moss to an even shape.
Now back the wreath: turn the frame over; secure the wreath wrap with hairpins on the inside; stretch the wrap over the frame and hairpin it in place at regular intervals. Continue the process until the frame is complete.
Before getting the flowers delivered Stoke, the wreath must be edged. Double-leg mount well-balanced fans of cupressus and, starting on the outer edge, insert the wired fans into the lower part of the frame, just on the wreath wrap. The anchored foliage should slope downwards, towards the workbench. Complete first the outer and then the inner edges, ensuring that the foliage overlaps and maintaining an even circular shape.

Arranging those cut flowers

Ideally, you would already own a vase or two. If you don't, purchase a large glass one, the wider it is at the top, the better. A bouquet usually contains enough flowers to fill two vases. Arrange the larger flowers at the back and the smaller ones at the sides and the front. Wrap the ribbon that came with the bouquet around your vase. Check your own garden for greenery, if none came with your bouquet. Use half of the packet of flower food straight away, mix it with the vase water and save the rest for the water change. A Formal Posy
A design that has become popular in recent years, the formal posy is also called a posy pad. Dainty and pretty, it is a suitable tribute to be sent either to older relatives from children or to a child. The ribbon edging is straightforward to attach with the German pins, although a little extra care is required to ensure a neat finish at the join. It is as well not to draw attention to the join by putting it at the ‘front’; instead, it can be placed either to one side or at the rear of the cluster.
The chrysanthemums are cut with sufficiently long stems to allow them to be inserted firmly into the foam base. Chrysanthemums at the outer edge can be wired for extra security. The outer ring of flowers must not obscure the ribbon edging. The basing must be even and have a smooth finish, with flowers Moss Side beveled towards the cluster to give the whole base a rounded profile.

Making Flowers Last Longer

1. Always use clean vases or containers. This will prevent any bacteria from ruining the quality of the flowers.
2. Remove all of the leaves which will be under the water while in the vase. Leaves that are submerged will rot, thus creating bacteria and shortening the life span of your flowers.
3. Always add the cut flower food supplied to you by your Tujunga florist, to the water in the vase. Change the water and flower food every three to four days.
4. Our grower fresh flowers are shipped when they are in bud or half open, which is the recommended state to pick flowers. You will then have the pleasure of seeing them slowly open up, this also increases the life span of your flowers.
5. Never place your floral arrangements in full sun or over a radiator. This will cause excess water loss from the flowers, and they will wilt very quickly. For a maximum life span the best place for your flowers is in a cool room.
6. Use a container that is in proportion to the amount of flowers you have. Too small of a container for the flowers will not hold enough water, and they may dry out before you realize it.
7. Once or twice a day lightly spray your finished arrangement with clear water to create a humid atmosphere around the flowers.

Pressing
Ferns press well and should you haye enough Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) to spare, it is a really successful way to keep it and the leaves will last all winter. As the stems are rather long they are liable to break in the middle but with the support of a thin cane or dial stick placed behind the main rib and caught with a wire in about three places, they stand well and quite firmly.
Smaller ferns will stand on their own and make a nice touch of green added to a small bowl or basket of mixed dried flowers Govanhill such as statice, helichrysum and yellow yarrow.
Bracken can be pressed and used in small pieces painted and glittered for Christmas. It is advisable to soak the bracken overnight in a solution of starch and water, dry off on blotting paper next day before pressing. This helps to stiffen it before painting.
Beech sprays that have turned a lovely autumnal colour press well and add a flat spray of good colour as a background for other dried and preserved flower or seed heads.

Rose Shows
Growing large and perfectly formed blossoms to compete in the organized rose shows that are held every summer in most parts of the country requires advance preparation, careful cultivation ­and a first-rate bush of a variety suited to show purposes. Hybrid teas are most frequently used, and among them the symmetrical, high-centered, large-petaled varieties such as Mister Lincoln and Chrysler Imperial are particularly favored by exhibitors. The techniques involved in producing flowers for competition are little different from those ordinarily employed for rose cultivation, and skill develops rapidly. I can recall a florist Halewood who won prizes with the very first blooms he showed, and several other beginners who would have won had they followed more closely the finicky regulations for showing roses. For information on the two national shows held each year, write the American Rose society, 4048 Roselea Place, Columbus, Ohio 43214. Local shows are often announced in the society's magazine, The American Rose. You need a show schedule because you have to plan your strategy, and the planning begins with the selection of a show to enter. Choose one that will be held conveniently nearby at a date that gives you time in which to complete preparations.

Love these flowers series - Chionodoxa
In Asia Minor only a little over a century ago, the Swiss botanist Pierre-Edmond Boissier discovered chionodoxas blooming at the edge of the retreating mountain snows. Today three species are widely available from Canton florists. They bloom in early spring shortly after the first crocuses open and, in light shade, the flowers will last three to four weeks. The most common species is C. luciliae, a 6-inch gem that bears eight to 10 violet-blue, white-centered 1-inch flowers on each stem. The white C. luciliae alba and lilac-pink C. luciliae rosea bear two to three flowers on a stem. C. sardensis is also 6 inches tall and has ¾-inch porcelain-blue flowers with a touch of white at the throat; it bears six to eight blossoms on a stem. C. gigantea grows 10 inches tall and bears eight to 10 1½-inch pale purple-blue flowers with white centers on a stem. The white C. gigantea alba is rare, but C. gigantea rosea 'Pink Giant,' with eight to 10 blush-pink 1½-inch flowers per stem, is usually available; it is often listed in bulb catalogues as a form of C. luciliae. Chionodoxas are most effective in large groups under deciduous trees, in front of early-flowering shrubs, or on banks where they can be naturalized. Though short stemmed, the blossoms are also attractive and long lived in cut-flower arrangements.

Adding Texture to a Wreath
To add to the textures in the wreath, Viburnum tinus, a very versatile evergreen foliage, was used to fill in any small spaces. The rosettes of dark green foliage and the tiny bronze buds and white flowers add another dimension to this open wreath. The combination of bold and warm oranges and reds make this a suitable colouring for a cold, and perhaps bleak, winter service.

If you would like to decorate a basket, attach a nosegay of dried flowers to the front or handle. For a more dramatic look, twist the fresh flowers of loves-lies-bleeding around the handle of a large basket, where it will air-dry naturally. The foliage and seedpods of autumn can also add seasonal interest. Another way to adorn your bas­ket is to glue or wire dried flowers and foliage onto the basket rim. A Modern Handtied Design
For many years, assistants in flower shops in Europe have held flowers in the hand as the customer chose them, and then tied them together with twine, to produce

Tulips, a mainstay of spring gardens everywhere, can provide abundant flowers in a wide spectrum of colors from March through May, and many varieties can be enjoyed as house plants in midwinter. Dwarf varieties are excellent in rock gardens, and tall-growing ones are indispensable in borders. Most tulips make excellent cut flowers.
More than 4,000 named varieties of tulips are now in existence; several hundred are available commercially from a Simi Valley flower shop. They are grouped into 15 classes, which are subject to almost constant revision.
Garden tulips are classed not only by their ancestry and flowering characteristics, but also by their time of bloom. In Zone 6, for example, so-called early-flowering tulips such as T. kaufmanniana and T. fosteriana bloom in mid- to late April, mid season tulips (Mendel, triumph, Darwin hybrid) bloom in late April to early May, and late-flowering tulips (Darwin, lily-flowered, cottage, Rembrandt, parrot, double late, T. greigii) bloom throughout May. Tulip flowers usually have cups about 2 or 3 inches deep but those that have been developed to bear unusually large flowers may have cups more than 4 inches deep. Some of the species tulips have cups as small as 1 inch deep.

One of my favourite flowers - Ammobium (everlasting, sand flower)
Characteristics: Winged ever­lastings are wonderful additions to the summer garden. Their tiny white daisylike flowers bloom profusely from July to October if deadheaded. The flowers are about 1 inch across with glistening white petals and brilliant yellow centers. For use in dried arrangements, try Am­mobium alatum 'Grandiflorum', a larger, showier form with flowers ¼ to ½ inch across on 3-foot stems.
Cultural Information: Ammobium require full sun and dry, light soil. They are best propagated by seed sown in early spring.
Harvesting/Drying: The flowers will continue to open during the drying process, so it is best to harvest when the flowers are half opened. As they dry, they will expose their sunny yellow centers. Pick more flowers than you think you might need be­cause they tend to shrink in the drying process. Hang the flow­ers to dry immediately; upon completion, you may choose to have the flowers delivered Hendon in a beautiful arrangement. Truest color and best results are achieved by fast drying. The flower heads tend to droop after they are dried, so for use in arrangements, wire supports must be added.

Design lines
The main lines in a traditional flower design include the outline, which refers to the contours, and is created with spike materials; the focal point line, which is the main line of graded flowers, forming the centre of interest, and for which a mass form is used, and the transitional lines, which link the two contrasting spike and mass forms. Smaller flowers and foliage are arranged in sequences (lines) of graded sizes, buds being placed towards the outer edge, and fuller Bristol City Centre flowers at the centre. Other materials can then be placed at various levels to fill in the gaps in the design. Follow these simple guidelines to create some inspired floral arrangements.

Nosegays

A certain amount of stress will cause the dry stems to break. Caution should be taken when working with all dried material for this reason. Online care
Flowers are a great gift for any occasion but no one wants to feel cheated into paying for something they didn't receive. Trading online is all about trust, and without trust no online company will survive for very long. (Lilies do grow very well indeed with the protection of a pot.) And as lilies are his specialty he also puts out many different lilies in pots which make a lovely show. Lastly, the tubs are replaced by two large hydrangea plants (available from your Gilmer florist) and these bloom from August to October. But, don’t forget that to make this system work you do need an area near the house to keep the out-of-season pots, or if not near the house, well out of sight and near a tap or access to water. The lily is closely intertwined with Christian history. Lil­ies grew in the Holy Land and carvings of them adorned the Temple in Jerusalem. Lilies, said Dios­corides, "being beaten small with honey . . . clear faces and make them without wrinkles." Another of his prescriptions, for a face oil, was more difficult to concoct: it required 3,000 lilies to prepare a single batch of the lotion, not to mention days of mincing, boiling and straining before the precious liquid was ready.

Pots and tubs
There are various ways of dealing with pots and tubs. A friend of mind has a rotation system which is very successful. As he has practically no garden, he capitalizes on a terrace on which he has only two large tubs showing at a time, although in fact he has eight pots or tubs in all. In winter two are planted with a small winter-flowering Viburnum tinus called ‘Evelyn Price’. This evergreen has clusters of pinky-white flowers, and blooms almost continuously all winter long. Meanwhile he has planted two tubs of mixed bulbs for spring and they are placed on view when they break into flower. For high summer he has tubs of the most beautiful lilies I have ever seen including Lilium regale and with its wonderful gold stamens, Lauratum, the sun lily of Japan. (Lilies do grow very well indeed with the protection of a pot.) And as lilies are his specialty he also puts out many different lilies in pots which make a lovely show. Lastly, the tubs are replaced by two large hydrangea plants (available from your Whalley Range florist) and these bloom from August to October. But, don’t forget that to make this system work you do need an area near the house to keep the out-of-season pots, or if not near the house, well out of sight and near a tap or access to water. Tubs and pots need plenty of water especially in the summer months. If you are able to submerge the pots under soil level they do not dry out nearly so quickly.

A beautiful flower - Bergenia
Characteristics: The large ever­green leaves of bergenia pro­vide interest in the garden throughout the year. The dense clusters of flowers that bloom in early spring are held high on strong stems. Harvest the flowers Longwood Highlands when they are in full bloom.
Cultural Information: Bergenia will grow in almost any soil. It will tolerate full sun in the North, but requires part sun in warmer southern areas. Harvesting/Drying: Hang the flowers to dry in a warm spot. The colors of the flowers will deepen as they dry. The pink flowers, for example, will deepen to mauve. The attractive mauve flower heads blend well with greens and white in arrangements.

A Modern Handtied Design
For many years, assistants in flower shops in Europe have held flowers in the hand as the customer chose them, and then tied them together with twine, to produce
a carefully organized bunch, ready to be placed straight in a vase.

Hybrid perpetuals are the first of the modern roses, concocted about 1840 from the damask, China and Bourbon dynasties. The second part of the name is misleading; when they were introduced, they did indeed blossom more steadily than any other class then available. But most varieties bloom profusely in June, then produce a more modest flowering in the fall, with occasionally, in some cases, a sprinkling of blossoms during the months in between.

Switch on the glue gun and place your materials on a sheet of paper. Prepare small ribbon bows and wire and tape small clusters of wax flowers, removing most of the flower stems. Starting at the ends of the headband, glue on first a small trail of hedera and then an attractive combination of flowers and ribbons. Work from the ends up to the centre and then fill any gaps with small flowers or clusters of foliage. Allow the glue to dry completely; spray the finished band lightly with water, and store. The Stately Gladioluses
Although dahlias and lilies have been long-time favorites in gardens and as cut flowers, the all-round champion in the latter category is the gladiolus. It has been a mainstay of the florist Mount Crosby trade for years; more land in the United States (some 20,000 acres) is devoted to the raising of gladioluses commercially than to any other bulb. The stately flower spikes, which range from 1 foot in height for the miniature strains to over 5 feet for the large-flowered types, come in every color of the rainbow, including blue. When considering gladioluses for the garden, you might bear in mind one small problem; the lower blossoms on each spike bloom and fade before the upper ones open, and unless you remove the blossoms as fast as they wither, gladioluses in a display bed or border tend to look unkempt. For this reason I grow mine in rows in a cutting garden near my vegetables, out of sight, and bring the flower spikes indoors just as the lower blossoms are beginning to open. Every few days I rearrange the flowers, pulling off the faded lower blooms as the upper ones open and shortening the stems until just the flowering tips are left to float in a shallow dish. Treated this way, gladioluses offer more color per stem than any other flower I know.

Anniversaries
Whether the occasion is a wedding anniversary or a birthday, an arrangement always makes a popular gift, as the recipient has no work to do.
